IS this the Gold Coast’s most luxurious green home?
Kingfisher House, on the edge of the Gold Coast Hinterland, was built with a clear mission — to show others how to build a sustainable luxury house.
The owners of the Currumbin Waters property, Sean Triner and Christiana Stergiou, will throw open the doors to their humble abode this weekend as part of Renew’s Sustainable House Day.

The program gives people the chance to explore some of the country’s most unique and inspiring sustainable homes, and learn from the people who designed them, built them, and live in them.
“We just wanted to build this place to show what you can do if you put your mind to it in terms of sustainable building for a luxury house,” Mr Triner said.
“It’s got all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a luxury Gold Coast family home but with a sustainable approach.”

The couple bought the block in 2020 and tasked Peter McArdle of PTMA Architecture to come up with an energy efficient and carbon neutral home design.
They wanted sustainability to be a priority in the many choices they made throughout the build.
“We were asking ourselves what the carbon footprint of each particular thing was, did it create pollution, how did it sit with the flora and fauna, those types of things,” Mr Triner said.
“We wanted a design to minimise the amount of energy we used and to look beautiful and fit in with the countryside here.”

They demolished the existing termite-damaged house that was on the block but were keen to recycle as much as they could.
“We really tried to reuse everything we could. We crushed the material down to be able to reuse it or used similar materials and used the slab that was already here,” Mr Triner said.
The end result is a modern five-bedroom two-bathroom home with a flexible design that can suit a wide range of people including multi-generational families.

A standout feature is the pond that filters inside to the main courtyard.
“It’s basically outside on the lawn with a waterfall and creates this lovely ambient noise and comes into the courtyard underneath the doors,” he said.
“It’s filled with local fish as well.”
Brick and zinc cladding combine with timber and concrete to create the showstopper house.
It is designed to respond to the local climate with insulated, tight sealed, double glazing as well as active systems such as hydronic heating, solar, batteries and a car charging system.

The central courtyard helps control the climate through the home by allowing an outdoor lifestyle in inclement weather and to allow both sides of the home to be left open for better cross ventilation.
As well as a 15m pool and pontoon, the block also includes master planning for future provision for higher densities well as edible and productive gardens with an option for a future market stall.

There will be 12 homes opening as part of Sustainable House Day in Queensland this year including Kingfisher House.
“Sustainable House Day is dedicated to showcasing Australia’s most inspiring sustainable homes, while providing information for all Australians motivated to take the next step on their green-home journey, no matter who they are, or where they live,” said Renew CEO Dr Fiona Gray.
“At Renew, we hope that Sustainable House Day is a time to inspire Australians to inject more sustainable solutions into their own home.”
Kingfisher Home will be open on Sunday March 19, 2023 from 9am to noon and 2pm to 5pm.
