You may not have heard of him, but you’ve probably seen his work. Rising star designer Jayson Pate, founder and CEO of Jayson Pate Designs, is the brains behind some of the hottest houses on the Gold Coast.
His team’s inspiring and iconic designs with an emphasis on modern and contemporary style are scattered throughout the city.

Mr Pate, who is a former AFL player for the Southport Sharks and a survivor of the 2002 Bali bombings, started his business 15 years ago and has since played an integral part in the transformation of the city’s architecture.
Demand for his design services is soaring – Yourtown art union recently engaged him to design its 2023 Gold Coast Christmas lottery prize home and he has a string of repeat clients who refuse to go to anyone else.

According to Mr Pate, the typical Gold Coast “McMansion” is on the way out, with homeowners choosing high-quality designs over size and scale.
“I didn’t grow up around that typical Gold Coast design which was acceptable for so long,” Mr Pate said.
“Somewhere in my subconscious, it was ingrained in me that (homes) could be better.
“No longer are people settling for just a big home. Everyone wants something as good as what has already been created or they want to beat it. People are striving for better.”

Mr Pate describes his style as contemporary, but said any design style done properly was timeless.
“At the moment we’re going through a modern Mediterranean era,” he said. “Arches are going in everywhere.
“Dark and moody is also in, which I love and am certainly adept at doing.
“In saying that, quality designed and built Hamptons homes will always be in.”

Known for pushing boundaries, Mr Pate has come up with some truly out-of-this-world designs.
“It’s a well-known fact that the Gold Coast’s architecture scene was light years behind everywhere else a decade or two ago,” said Mr Pate, who grew up in Melbourne.
“I may be biased but I do believe the city is shaking off that reputation and is now winning ground off other major cities in the country.
“There are any number of homes built on the Gold Coast that could compete with some of Sydney and Melbourne’s best and clients from these cities are now making contact to have their homes designed by us.”
He said the design industry was moving ahead in leaps and bounds, with a number of companies improving the quality of architecture and beautifying city streetscapes.
Dahlia Estate at Tallebudgera is one of Jayson Pate’s favourite designs.
Of his Gold Coast projects, Mr Pate said Dahlia Estate, a sprawling Tallebudgera residence, was a firm favourite.
He designed the initial concept 10 years ago, but the house was built only last year.
“The site had a presence. I don’t feel like that about much, but this particular site deserved something special,” Mr Pate said.
“If you look at the property from a bird’s-eye view, it almost has a petal shape which is where the Dahlia came from. It’s a really cool house.”

Mr Pate cites his upbringing in Melbourne as being his inspiration for becoming a designer, but admits to having always loved graphics and art at school.
He went on to study architectural technology at the Gold Coast Institute of Tafe, not knowing it would lead him to become one of the most influential designers on the Coast.
“I’ve always been quite creative,” a modest Mr Pate said.
“Looking back, it was a great decision to study at Tafe, knowing how strong the construction industry has always been here.”

The team at Jayson Pate Designs, who also have an office in Melbourne, takes on 120 Gold Coast projects a year with many attracting nationwide attention.
