Designed by Lee and Kerry Oakey, the four-storey new-build bears no resemblance to the original, more “modest”, single-storey brick and tile house that came before it.
Although they wanted to keep as much of the original house as they could, the only salvageable parts were the frame of the annexe, two large brass mirrors and a huge bow saw, which now has pride of place over the pool bar.

“Three things were non-negotiable,” Mr Oakey said.
“It had to be open plan on the ground floor, it had to have a self-contained fun area, for relaxing and entertaining, and it had to have a spa,” Mr Oakey said.

The house has two in fact – one on the terrace off the master suite and one outside the property’s detached two-bedroom annexe, which can be rented out or used as guest accommodation.
The house is sophisticated and stylish.
Despite the house being on a very long, thin block that fans out at the front, the Oakeys made the most of the space, building up three storeys to capture city views from the rooftop bar.
It’s almost impossible to get a feel for the size of this house, which spans more than 100sq m under roof, until you’re in it.

Mrs Oakey said while they wanted it to be a fun house, with two teenage children and two large dogs, it had to be family functional too.
The couple didn’t skimp on the build and if you can drag yourself away from the bar, you’ll notice some nice touches, such as the timber staircase, hand-cut and carved from camphorwood with black balustrading (much more dog-friendly than glass).
The kitchen is a not to the owners’ English heritage.
Italian porcelain tiles cover the lower living areas and extend out to the pool, while patterned plasterwork on the walls and a circular bath in the master suite show this isn’t your average run-of-the-mill home. It is a home that will stand the test of time, helped by a tonne of steel in its foundations.

“We really wanted to capture elements of the holidays that we have had in places around the world,” Mrs Oakey said. “We always enjoy sitting at a poolside bar sipping a cocktail when we’re away, so we thought, why don’t we recreate that at home.”
“It turned out to be a bigger job than we thought,” Mr Oakey said, “but the house is as solid as a rock as a result.”
There’s a touch of Hamptons too.
The Oakeys had always intended to spend many years in this house, but instead feel it is a little too big for their needs.
