Is this Burleigh Heads’ best-kept secret?

Could this be Burleigh Heads’ best-kept secret?
A sanctuary where beach meets bush, ‘Kualia’ is surrounded by national park, but just moments from the famed surf, restaurants, and boutiques of the southern Gold Coast hub.
The luxury renovated home is the inspired re-imagining of a 1980s home by owners Kerryn and Gary Collins, built in the style of esteemed American modernist architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.
It’s tucked away behind gates at the end of a private laneway
Gary is a construction project manager, while Kerryn works in tourism marketing. The couple were childhood friends growing up on the Gold Coast, reunited 10 years ago after Kerryn returned from a decade-long stint in the US.
Gary was stunned to discover the elevated 938 sqm block in 2020, tucked away at the end of a private laneway at 1596 Gold Coast Hwy, with tracks providing direct access to the beach and sparkling Tallebudgera Creek.
“We’re the only block in Burleigh surrounded by bushland on all four sides. It felt like we’re in the middle of nowhere, but right in the heart of Burleigh Heads,” he said.
“We thought, ‘this block is never going to be repeated’. We had to have it.”

Recognising the old home’s solid brick, concrete, and hard wood foundations, they engaged architect Allan Amores and Tailored Space Interiors to transform the six-bedroom behemoth into a sleek and sophisticated entertainer.
“It was a beautifully built home with really good bones,” Gary said.
“We wanted to keep the essence of the house, but it needed to be modern.”
An original spiral staircase now stands as a style statement, adorned with black steel balustrades beneath a 5.3m void. Full-height glazing enhanced the home’s remarkable connection with nature, and the outdated floorplan was overhauled to suit contemporary coastal living.

Bespoke lighting in keeping with the modernist theme
Soaring timber-lined ceilings and original cypress parquetry floors were retained, with the couple painstakingly seeking a match to extend the feature through the home.
The house has four bedrooms and three bathrooms, with multiple living spaces across two levels.
Downstairs is a large gym/rumpus room with a bar, cosy cinema with tiered seating and a popcorn station, and an office, along with the guest bedroom with kitchenette.
Upstairs, a sage-green curved gas fireplace graces the light-filled lounge and dining, while the designer kitchen with butler’s pantry is fitted with Siemens appliances.
Al fresco entertaining pavilion
A new magnesium pool was added
Three bedrooms on this level include the master with a bold feature wall, spacious walk-through robe, balcony, and lavish ensuite. The marble-tiled triple shower has a rain head, while the oversized freestanding tub affords tree-canopy views.
With not a neighbour in sight, the property is a dream for occasions large and small – the Collins have hosted a 21st birthday celebration and wedding with live bands, along with annual soirees for their local surf club.
Alfresco entertaining is complimented by a barbecue kitchen and bar fridges in the covered pavilion, which overlooks the travertine-tiled magnesium pool.

The couple is selling to downsize, acquiring the penthouse in their newly finished Mermaid Beach apartment development as a lock-and-leave base between overseas travel.
While excited for their next chapter, Kerryn will miss the serene lifestyle of the past two years at their unique haven, disturbed only by the delightful company of local wildlife including koalas and kookaburras.
“We call it our compound. We come home and we feel like we’re in a sanctuary because it is so peaceful and quiet,” she said.
“But then, we have the track that bypasses the highway altogether, so it is a true five-minute walk down to the restaurants for Friday date night.”
The property is marketed for auction on March 9 by Harcourts Coastal agents, Ed Cherry and Dax Roep.
