Entrepreneur gives up big vision for tiny house estate

Ever wanted to own a tiny house? How about a dozen of them?
The owner of this Gold Coast Hinterland property had big plans for a unique collection of small-scale dwellings, but will now pass the blueprint to another entrepreneur to bring his vision to fruition.
Black and White Estate Agents Deanne Marek and Linda Covino are taking the sprawling 9.8ha Wongawallan parcel to auction on May 18.

Ms Covino said the owner had purchased the landholding in 2022 and planned to operate a brewery as well as provide short-term accommodation at 13 tiny houses to be built onsite.
Two tiny houses have already been built, with provisions in place for another five, while an old machinery shed has been transformed into a rustic barn-style event space.
“It is definitely a business opportunity with endless possibilities if someone with an entrepreneurial spirit bought it,” Ms Covino said.
“The current owner wanted to have a distillery up there called the Wonky Donkey — he was going to have miniature donkeys too.

“He had the dream of having 13 tiny houses in total, spread across the different plots, and several of the platforms and powered sites are ready to go.
“But things changed along the way and he has now popped it on the market.”
The property is set amid stunning mountain and rainforest surrounds with views to the city skyline and ocean beyond.
A high-set three-bedroom, two-bathroom house with a renovated kitchen provides a base with plenty of country charm, while the option for land-partnering agreements can be explored as a potential commercial venture.

Two tiny homes on the site are currently contracted to Tiny Away, a booking platform for the niche style of holiday accommodation. Each one-bedroom, one-bathroom house measures about 14 sqm and was advertised at $179 per night for two guests.
An additional five powered tiny home pads had also been installed, along with firepits and a camping area.
The huge restored barn was going to house a craft beer distillery, and is ready to host weddings and other functions.
“It is a rustic gem,” Ms Covino said.

She said the Hinterland tourism industry was still reeling from the devastating storms of early 2024, although residents and local business owners had worked hard to rebuild and recover.
“There has been a lot of closures up in Tamborine Mountain, and from speaking to the locals everyone wants an event space like this,” she said.
“It will take someone creative who can envision putting the finishing touches on this amazing space. There is nothing else like it up there in the mountains.”
PropTrack data shows nine houses were advertised for sale in Wongawallan in the past month, though just six had sold since last year.
