Before and after: from hazard zone to Gold Coast Hinterland haven

FROM red-brick wreck to Hinterland haven, this luxury family estate in Tallebudgera Valley has undergone a breathtaking transformation.
The contemporary five-bedroom home at 41 Golden Valley Rd showcases coastal style while incorporating a raft of resort-worthy features, including an al fresco entertaining zone, spa and steam room, and games room with bar and wine cellar.
Spanning two levels on a 6,218sq m lot backing onto a creek, the home is marketed by Josh Willatt, of McGrath Estate Agents Palm Beach, and goes under the hammer on November 23.

Owner-builder Mitchell Purcell, of NextGen Design and Construct, completed the renovation in 2021, having recognised the property’s “really good set of bones” despite its dilapidated condition.
Mr Purcell and his wife, Emma, purchased the house in 2019 when it was last sold, also by Mr Willatt, at a forced auction.
Back then, the house was riddled by termites, with gaping holes in the floors and a stench so bad many prospective buyers turned on their heels without daring to inspect it.
“It was a fair bit of work, but I could see the potential,” Mr Purcell said.
“It had a really good set of bones to start with. It was built by a bricklayer so it was a really sturdy house, it had just been very run down and was in such bad shape we gutted the whole place and started fresh.”

Works included opening up the floorplan to create greater flow between living spaces, as well as designing a showstopping master bedroom with walk-in robe, ensuite, and outdoor bath retreat.
Bespoke flooring and lighting were installed, while the kitchen was given a glamorous makeover with marble finishes and a butler’s pantry.
Other highlights include a sound-proof cinema room, study with private entry, large powered shed, and four-car garage.

Outside is, “where all the fun stuff is”, Mr Purcell said, including built-in day beds by the heated pool, a fire pit, and a dream kids’ playground shaded by the canopy of one of the property’s many mature trees.
With plans to stay, the Purcells designed a family sanctuary to share with their three young children, aged 1 to 7.
“We didn’t plan on flipping this one. I designed all the little extras, the pool house with the steam room and the playground, to suit us and our family, but the builder in me is always on the hunt for something and another pretty good opportunity came up so we jumped at it,” Mr Purcell said.
They will build new on another block in Tallebudgera.
