The buyers behind Gold Coast’s biggest sales of the year

Buyers behind the Coast’s most expensive sales included Ross Jurisich (top R) and Clive Palmer.
Mining magnates, media personalities, beer brewers and bookmakers were among a colourful cast of buyers behind the Gold Coast’s biggest residential sales of the financial year.
Together, they splashed a total of more than $400m on the 27 most expensive homes that changed hands in the past 12 months.
Glitzy oceanfront mansions, canal trophy homes and luxury beachside penthouses caught the eye of these cashed-up buyers, during one of the most extraordinary years in property history.
Every sale that made the list was priced at $10m or more, as the appetite for lifestyle destinations along the southeast coastline pushed home values to dizzying new highs.
The Coast’s biggest sale of the 2021/22 year was a glamorous three-level riverfront home on the Isle of Capri, Surfers Paradise.
Hedges Ave — otherwise known as Multimillionaire’s Row — claimed many of the year’s top sales
The $26.88m sale went under contract in October 2021, although the off-market deal was negotiated a year earlier.
It was sold by Kool Kids early learning centre founder Bruce Coulson and his wife, Carolyne, to Sydney-based buyer, Yao Zhang.
Big-name buyers of other big-ticket sales included businessman Clive Palmer, who dropped $20m on a Sovereign Islands mansion owned by German superyacht-builder Klaus Lilischkie.
And former radio host Alan Jones snapped up a $12.25m Southport estate from Brett and Rebecca Frizelle, founders of the Frizelle Automative Group and co-owners of the Gold Coast Titans NRL Club.
Similar to previous years, the cash splash continued along Mermaid Beach’s Multimillionaires’ Row.
A beachfront home at 213 Hedges Ave formerly owned by Harvey Norman Queensland boss, Stephen Cavalier, fetched $21.75m.
ComputerShare founder Chris Morris’ former Mermaid Beach home
It was purchased by Stone & Wood Brewing Company director, Ross Jurisich, and Light Years Skin Studio founder, Megan Jurisich.
Pub owner, tourism entrepreneur and Computershare co-founder Chris Morris also sold his Hedges Ave mansion for a hefty $21m.
Amir Prestige principal Amir Mian said the Gold Coast’s most exclusive waterfront enclaves of Mermaid Beach, Sovereign Island and Isle of Capri would always be in demand, but somewhat more modest price growth could be expected through the remainder of 2022.

Mr Mian said interstate buyers, particularly those from Melbourne, were back in force now that they were able to inspect properties in person after border restrictions were abandoned.
“We weren’t sure if the flight to lifestyle destinations would carry on post-Covid — as it turns out, interstate buyers are coming in cashed up and they are after a piece of paradise.
“There is a steady supply of buyers and, yes, we are getting a steady supply of sellers as well so it’s not going to be crazy, crazy prices but I don’t see a fall in the prestige market,” he said.
Mr Mian said returning expats would be the next wave of big-ticket buyers on the Coast.
