Paul Uhlmann’s house at 46 Kagoola Drive, Mudgeeraba goes to auction on November 9.
He’s behind some of the country’s hottest houses so it’s no surprise Queensland architect Paul Uhlmann’s family home has its own list of impressive features.
Mr Uhlmann, who has designed a string of high profile homes including The Block’s Shelly Craft’s Byron Bay dreamhome, spent the past six years renovating his Gold Coast house with wife Rebecca.
The property works with its stunning backdrop.

The split-level five-bedroom home, which has just been listed for sale, curves into the land on a hilltop on a 30800sq m block and it comes with a pool, media room, study, parent’s retreat and five-car garage.
But it wasn’t always so grand.
The decorated architect, who has won a string of awards for his work, and his wife stumbled across the place they would eventually call home more than 30 years ago.
Welcome home!
There are plenty of spaces to unwind.
“I visited a project in Mudgeeraba and always remembered it was in a unique small valley with only half a dozen properties,” Mr Uhlmann said.
“It was a beautiful location.
“We eventually went looking at property up there and purchased this home in 2016.
“It looks down towards the Coast but also up to Springbrook,” he said.
“It was pretty rare to get those two views.”

The couple, who have three children, then got to work and embarked on a mammoth renovation.
“We basically pulled it apart and rebuilt it,” Mr Uhlmann said.
“The shell was good, everything around it was essentially pulled out and rebuilt over six years.
“Right from the windows and doors, we moved walls, and even the pool was decommissioned and we built a new pool.
“We adding more openings in walls to link spaces together and just really make it more relevant to how we live now compared to how we lived 40 years ago.”

The end result is a contemporary-rural house that works in harmony with its surroundings.
From the outside timber and stone cladding soften the house while inside, high ceilings create plenty of space and allow natural light to filer in.
Modern fixtures including pendant lights, louvres and a neutral colour palette create a warm and inviting space.
No shortage of details wherever you look.
Mr Uhlmann used his extensive design expertise to kit out the residence with plenty of extras including the Horizon Edge pool which capitalises on the views of the coastline and a Stovax fireplace for making the most of cool evenings.
“Hopefully it feels more like a home than a show home,” Mr Uhlmann said.
“It’s definitely been lived in and enjoyed.”
“We have breakfast and look out to the ocean or look at Sprigbrook and you really have to pinch yourself,” Mr Uhlmann said,
“And at night the Gold Coast lights sparkle down below through the valley.”
Inside the home.
Another favourite feature, Mr Uhlmann said, was a waterfall that appears on the property after extensive rain.
“It runs for about five or six days after heavy rainfall,” he said.
“It links up at the back and flows down the valley and goes into Mudgeeraba Creek.”
Harcourts Coastal’s Katrina Walsh is marketing the property and said the home offered a great lifestyle opportunity.
“This home is a celebration of the effortless design excellence Paul is known for with carefully crafted details that elevate the home beyond measure,” she said.
“It really does need to be experienced to be appreciated.”
Mr Uhlmann said he and his wife had decided to sell so they could downsize.
“It sounds cliche but the children are heading off to university and we are ready to downsize,” he said.
The property goes to auction on November 9.
The greenery has even been added to the house.
