A spectacular waterfront home rivalling a six-star resort has been crowned Gold Coast House of the Year.
Havendeen swept the pool at Master Builders’ prestigious annual Housing and Construction awards for their 2023 build named Pala, described as a “modern masterpiece”.
Designed by Joe Snell, the striking Mermaid Waters property is home to Havendeen directors Rob and Tui McKinnon and their two boys, aged 7 and 9.

It also won Best Residential Pool
The six-bedroom, seven-bathroom house scooped another three awards at Friday’s black-tie event, including Individual Home from $5m to $10m, Best Residential Kitchen and Best Residential Swimming Pool.
Set behind a jaw-dropping curved façade, the home is centred around a stunning kitchen featuring black stone benches and a 12m void drawing natural light throughout living spaces.
The judges applauded Havendeen for: “the perfect execution of the build, from the basement through to the third-storey rooftop terrace”.

Havendeen’s Mr McKinnon said Pala was designed foremost to suit the needs of his young family, but with a long list of special features including a breathtaking al fresco entertainment zone with a sunken bar and fire pit lounge and 12m pool.

“We’ve lived in the house for a year now and it is exactly how we had planned it, if not better,” Mr McKinnon said.
“It is an incredible home for family living, and it is also great for entertaining friends and family.
“When you open the rear doors to the outside, the home becomes just one massive entertaining area, and there is another rooftop bar which we use for special events.
“The pool is fully heated, with a swim-up edge to the cocktail bar and some shallow areas for the kids, and there’s a water fountain behind the day beds.”
DB Build won the BUSSQ Building Super President’s Award for La France at Mermaid Beach
Other major prize winners included McNab for Awaken Residences at Coolangatta by S&S Projects (McInnes Wilson Lawyers Project of the Year), and DB Build for La France at Mermaid Beach (BUSSQ Building Super President’s Award).
Master Builders Regional Manager – Gold Coast, Adam Profke, congratulated winners across all 52 categories.
“Our Housing & Construction Awards are the highlight of the year, celebrating not only the
residential and commercial projects but also the incredible people who make this industry
exceptional,” Mr Profke said.

“We’re up against some hefty challenges right now, including trade shortages, a 40 per cent hike in construction costs in the last three years, and a wave of regulatory changes, all as we play our part in tackling the housing crisis.
“But as we know, our industry is incredibly resilient – and the quality of the entries we’ve received this year proves that in spades, displaying next-level craftsmanship, ingenuity, and people with a passion for what they do, inspiring others to follow in their path.”
