Gold Coast Suns boss Bob East scores $5.3 million mansion sale

Suns chair Bob East has sold his Sorrento family mansion
NEW Suns chairman Bob East has scored a $5.3 million off-field win with the sale under the hammer of his waterfront Sorrento mansion.
Mr East, who officially took the top job at the ailing Gold Coast AFL club last month, first listed the sprawling property for $3.75m in 2018, but the six-bedroom, five-bathroom home failed to sell.
Mr East and his wife, Susan, decided instead to stay and renovate their luxury Main River family home before taking it to auction this month with Amir Prestige agents, Amir Mian and Rochelle Lamers.

With a floorplan spanning 711sq m, the double-storey Campbell St home has an impressive al fresco entertaining area, with a heated pool and spa, sandstone terrace with cabana and built-in barbecue kitchen, floodlit tennis court, and a pontoon.
A polished concrete circular driveway leads onto open-plan living spaces and a classic Hamptons-style kitchen.
Ms Lamers said the property’s generous 2,369sq m allotment close to the city centre appealed to buyers, with three bidders registered for the on-site auction as well as several other interested parties in the crowd.

“You don’t often see that land size in the middle of the Gold Coast and the floorplan worked really well as a family entertainer,” Mr Lamers said.
“This property ticked a lot of boxes with its wide north-east facing waterfrontage and the location in the exclusive Riviera Estate.
“There was a lot of interest from Sydney, but it ended up being a local buyer.”

Auctioneer Nigel Long took an opening bid of $4m, with the property announced on the market at $5m, sparking a final quick-fire exchange of offers before it was sold.
“The vendors were absolutely rapt with the figure,” Ms Lamers said.
“It was a good overall result which puts a lot of confidence in the market.”
Mr East took over from long-time chairman Tony Cochrane after this season’s round one clash against Sydney.

He set his sights on breaking the Suns’ finals drought, with the team having only made the top 12 twice since their inaugural season in 2011.
A seasoned hospitality and tourism industry executive, Mr East founded the Mantra Group in 2006, growing the brand into Australia’s largest hotel company and managing its $1.3bn acquisition by AccorHotels in 2018.
He has served as chair of Tourism Australia, Tourism Events Queensland and co-chaired the ASEAN business and tourism summit.
Property records show the house last changed hands in 2014 for $2.77m.
