Gold Coast new build: what started as a small renovation snowballed into a full rebuild

WHEN Gold Coast couple Jess and Ben Andrew missed out on Burleigh’s most iconic house, The Palms, in 2021, they decided to build their own version.

They loved everything about the showstopper property that sold to tennis superstar Lleyton Hewitt and his wife Bec, and enlisted the same builder — JG Building Projects — for their dream home.

The Palms at 13 Deodar Drive, Burleigh Heads attracted a huge following while it was being built and when it was being sold.

The build progress of The Palms was closely followed on Instagram by home renovators, influencers and buyers who fell in love with its Palm Springs-inspired look.

“We actually put an offer in on The Palms property, but when we missed out on that, we decided to buy a similar waterfront home and renovate,” Mrs Andrew said.

“We engaged Jamie (Gloag, founder of JG Building Projects) for the renovation and ended up going back to slab and doing a slab extension and complete rebuild.

“We’d seen what Jamie had done with The Palms, and we absolutely loved it.

“Its overall feel is not something we had seen on the Coast, and the attention to detail and his craftsmanship were second to none.”

The couple bought waterfront property 124 Melaleuca Drive, Palm Beach in June, 2021 and what started as a small renovation snowballed into a full rebuild, which was completed in June, 2022.

The end result, now known as Mela House, is centred around a 6.5m ceiling and pitched roof in the kitchen.

Curves, timber accents and greenery combine to create a standout house in the Palm Beach street.

“There aren’t too many houses with this super high-end fit-out, and we didn’t skimp on anything,” she said.

The pair have put the property up for sale — it is the first time a newly completed and move-in-ready home by JG Building Projects has been on the market since The Palms, which sold in September, 2021.

Kingfisher Realty Burleigh principal Conal Martin is marketing the property and said he expected keen interest from buyers.

“While there’s still a lot of demand for luxury property on the Gold Coast, there is very little available,” Mr Conal said.

“I was absolutely blown away by Mela House; the aura and feel of the home took my breath away.

“Very rarely does a home of this class and calibre ever come on the market.

“While JG Building Projects has gone to market with other properties in the past 12 months, they have been off-plan. This property is move-in ready.”
